The Costs
The cost of mediation depends on your situation and the number of sessions required.
Hourly rate
Mediation is usually billed on an hourly basis. This rate applies to all sessions and the drafting of the agreements. In most cases, a divorce process requires an average of 8 sessions.
Average costs of a divorce via mediation
An average divorce process via mediation typically costs between €2.200 and €3,500 (excl. VAT). The final costs depend on the complexity of the situation, the communication between the parties, and the number of sessions required. Mediation is often significantly cheaper than using two lawyers.
Subsidized mediation (addition)
In some cases, you may be eligible for subsidized legal aid, also known as a “legal aid grant.” The government then pays part of the costs of the mediation.
During the introductory meeting, I can review with you whether you qualify for this and what that specifically means for you.
Good to know:
Legal expenses insurance?
Do you have legal expense insurance? Mediation is covered by some legal expenses insurance policies. Sometimes there may be a waiting period; it may be worth checking this thoroughly.
Expert advice?
In some cases, particularly during divorce mediation, a situation may be so complex that it is advisable to consult an expert. Examples include a tax expert, a notary, or a child psychologist. In these cases, where necessary, I attend these appointments at a €0 rate.
The costs for engaging the expert are not included in my hourly rate.
